I am not sure how the weather is where you are, but in the north country it is time and past to start thinking about finding a way to stay in shape that doesn’t involve spending too much time outside.
Though it seems that the winters have been milder of late, the truth is that it is often unpleasant to be riding a bike, or running on the road when the weather gets cold and or inclement this time of year. That is especially true on those days when there are icy patches on the road. Good training is never advanced by injury. It is also true, that while there is something to be said for having the gumption to ride in the rain during the summer, riding in the rain when it is 40 degrees and cloudy is a whole nother animal.
Fortunately there are alternatives. You can take some time off from riding all together and work on other methods of staying in shape. Go to the club and mix a little stepper work with some buffing types of weight lifting. Or get yourself a home rower and work out some of those muscle groups that biking never hits. I guess spending some time on an exercise bicycle might be an option, but if you are serious about biking, it is a pale one.
Perhaps the best choice for keeping your biking self in tone is to get an indoor bike trainer and drag your normal every day machine inside with you. While not quite the same as riding on the road, I have found a training stand to be the best way of emulating my normal bike riding experience. It seems that no matter what style you choose, riding and exercyle just can’t replicate the feel of riding a bike. Now, you may disagree, but I think that the best thing is to try and stick as close to your normal riding conditions as you can.
For one thing, you spend a lot of time making sure that the ride you choose fits you and your style perfectly. Why would you want to mess with that for four or five or six months while the weather keeps you shut indoors?
You wouldn’t. I sure don’t. Training on my own bike, indoors, is the best choice for me. And it has the advantage of giving me a better workout for a more affordable price. Look in to it
